KaShanta's Diagnosis
Triple Negative but I'm Positive! In May of 2012, tests confirmed a diagnosis of HER2 Triple Negative breast cancer with lymph node involvement for KaShanta Sims. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and eventually in February 2015, due to another large tumor, she endured radiation which left significant visible burns and damage to her body.
HER2 Triple Negative does not respond well to traditional treatment. After the diagnosis, she spent countless hours researching holistic and alternative therapies that have proven to help many in conjunction with and/or without conventional medicine. Since cancer may respond to diet alone, her first defense was a nutritional diet. She incorporated the ketogenic diet (no sugar, gluten, GMO’s, processed food, or meat treated with antibiotics or steroids). A ketogenic diet eliminates carbohydrates, (which turns into glucose in the body) and replaces them with beneficial fats and protein. Since cancer cells thrive on glucose, the premise is that by removing carbs, cancer cells starve. She followed the 80/20 rule for food - 80% raw organic vegetables and fruits. Throughout her ordeal, KaShanta continued to work even though she was extremely ill. She lost the initial job that afforded her comprehensive medical coverage and therefore, had no other alternative for paying her bills other than continuing to press her way to work. Although she was no stranger to hard work, it becomes virtually impossible when you are unable to breathe - as in her case. Cancer metastasized to her lungs and to her brain. These factors combined with several others prompted her desire and pursuit for The KaShanta Sims Foundation, which promotes awareness of HER2 Triple Negative breast cancer.
Her passion for lobbying on Capitol Hill for insurance coverage for Medical Freedom of Choice, which would include holistic and alternative medicines for integrative therapies, would never be realized. There is no such thing as one size fits all. This fact is evidenced by her diagnosis, which is known to be resistive to mainstream cancer treatments.
